A date configuration option has been added to the archive articles module, so the user can manually adjust this module to match the archive articles view.
The default has been changed to published date.
Date grouping has been fixed also - it was displaying duplicate months before

Update
It's been found (with @jatitoam) that the patch works with SEF URLs disabled. Failed test was done with SEF URLs On.

The language strings used are incorrect
In the menu it says
JGLOBAL_ORDERING_DATE_DESC="If articles are ordered by date, which date to use."
JGLOBAL_ORDERING_DATE_LABEL="Date for Ordering"
In the module you are using
JGLOBAL_SHOW_DATE_DESC="Whether to show a date column in the list of articles. Select Hide to hide the date, or select which date you wish to show."
JGLOBAL_SHOW_DATE_LABEL="Show Date"
Otherwise it appears to work

Tested with English (en-GB) languge pack and test Data.
I set the status of some articles to archived and modified 2 of them while the testing process.
SEF on/off makes no difference for me.
Worked with "Date to show" values "Created" and "Published".
But there were problems with the "Modified" option:
- The Archiv shows me an entry from "November, -0001" (empty Year value?)
- This Month got no articles in it.
- I modified 2 articles, the new Month was shown (Aug, 15) but was empty.
(The article "Similar Tags", modified in oct, 13 was shown correct. Just the newly modifies articles ware not shown)

Testing with Test English (GB) Sample Data
Applied patch and set Date for Ordering to 'Published' in both Archived Articles link params and Archived Articles module params.
Clicking on the links for January, 2012 / January 2011 in the module present no changes to the listed articles.
Let me know if the info provided is not sufficient.
