See the title. This is meant to simplify the interface of Joomla and simply merges 2 views into one. We should do this in other places, too.

Test instructions

  • Check which messages you get in the warnings view and the database view before applying this patch.
  • Apply the patch.
  • Check that the same messages are displayed in the service view
  • Force the situations that let messages show up in the warnings or database view and check that the same messages show up in the service view.

This is a new PR for #4981.

@test I have a missing language string for the page title
screen shot 2014-12-03 at 03 40 09

Am I supposed to have one view or two tabs? I only have one for Database Information

Hi Brian, you should have at least the database tab, since the database view always displayed that data. More tabs will show up when Joomla has something to report. Basically, the messages from the warnings view.
I will take a look for that missing language string.

I forced a warning and did NOT get more tabs I just got more info on the same page - is that correct?

If that is correct then I dont like it as it doesnt specifically say Warning as it dod before and the third line in the screenshot could apply to both of the items above

the PR uses sliders and not tabs

brianteeman - comment - 3 Dec 2014

OK well then it does what you intend BUT as I stated I do not like the way
that they are all together with Warnings not being emphasised

We can switch this to tabs or we could improve the visibility here. I just used what was used in the warnings view. I'm open for everything.

I still dont see what problem is being solved with this PR - sorry

If anything it makes it HARDER to find Warning as they are now buried
inside something meaningless called Service

Brian, the idea is, that less views is better, especially for something like these messages. Right now the messages for system health are spread over 3 different views, at least from my perspective. The database view and the warnings view in com_installer and the post-installation-messages view. Having one central place where this stuff is displayed, would be better in my opinion. I would also merge the "Update", "Manage" and "Discover" view, since they are mostly the same. The idea is to reduce the noise in the GUI for the user.

Why should a warning about a not-updated database not be in the warnings view? As you know, I would also add a filesystem checker and changed core filesystems would also constitute as a warning to me. Why do I have an extra view just to "discover" extensions and for a beginner: What does "discover" mean? From other context, I would assume that its an app store and that they want to show me some advertised extensions. (Think of Play Store or Amazon here) Why can't I see which extensions need updating in my "manage" view? Yes, tehre is more displayed in the manage view than just the extensions that need updating, but that is more or less a filtering or GUI issue. Actually, right now the manage view is only usefull for one thing: Uninstalling extensions. (This is a bit generalised, but I hope you get what I mean)

Anyway, less views for logically similar things is better in my view and this PR tries to move into that direction.

I wont scream bloody murder if this one gets closed. It's a proposal, not more. Maybe someone else could do a judgement here?

I am closing this issue as I do agree that the new look with all messages grouped together isn't an improvement. Thank you for your contribution.
