I assume that not everyone contributing to Joomla will necessarily be familiar with it so it would be good to include some stats about its usage throughout the world.

I could see why you would say it doesn't belong there since one could simply go to Joomla's website and shortly read about it there - but the stats give a much more in depth view of how and where it is used (which could also be a motivating factor for someone to working on the project).
Do you think it doesn't belong anywhere or you are suggesting to me to look somewhere else to put it?
That assumes that you believe the stats have any value - I dont
