Pull Request resolves #46983 .
Add params to Fields groups.
The user can decide if he wants to group fields in the frontend and if yes can specify css classes.
When grouped fields are rendered in frontend, they are in an own container and can be styled via user.css.
The soultion does not affect existing sites, no b/c.
Make field groups and set params and classes. Add fields into groups (or not).
Check your frontend, play with user.css.

I've not yet had the need for this but playing more with custom fields lately, I could see the use in the future so thank you for the work.
I don't know why it is not possible to respond on a review, so I ask here as non-native speaker?
@brianteeman
I tried to make clear that "Fieldsgroup" is one group of fields and that the whole group has one css class.
We don't make a Group of fields which have the same css class (this is what I understand in your suggestion).
Is "Group CSS Class" acceptable?
