I asked this on the forum - https://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?f=865&t=1022992&p=3760937#p3760937 - but further testing has confirmed in my mind that this is a bug with the schema markup that the native breadcrumbs module is causing.

Hi @trogladyte I was unable to reproduce the bug. Could you please help me to reproduce the bug so that i can make some of my contribution.
Right now i am using version 6.1
Not really. Just enable the module and then do a Rich Snippets check on Google. You should see it.

I tested this on a fresh Joomla install with the Breadcrumbs module enabled.
On my setup, the schema is generated correctly with itemListElement, so no error appears in Google Rich Results.
It seems the issue only occurs in specific conditions where the breadcrumb list is empty or not properly built.
Could you please share the exact steps or page type where the invalid schema is generated?
Please check to see if you have a template override for this module using the old code
No overrides. It's happening on any of the 70-plus websites I manage.
