See my issue here at the Joomla! forum:
https://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?f=834&t=1020715&e=1&view=unread#unread
If a user logs into the front end of a site and "Require Password Reset" is set to Yes in their user account, SEF URLs fail to work, module assignments get ignored, and every page shows "Edit User Profile" in the component area until the password reset has been done.
I believe a system alert here would be very helpful, even if it just says "Please reset your password before continuing".
But I think more control over how the site loads when a password reset is being required would be a great thing.

PS if you want to control which modules will display on the passw9ord reset page then you can create a menu item for password reset and assign modules to that menu item

This sounds like a problem with your template. Please check.
If I log in to a site using the cassiopeia template and password reset enabled then I get directed to the form to reset the passsword AND a suitable mesage
Adding a menu item of the type 'Edit User Profile' fixed the issues with URL routing and modules display, but I am still not seeing the alert message. How do I force that to show?
Thats something to do with your template and not something that can be supported here.
