Background images applied to modules do not work well on responsive websites. The default CSS output is not set to "cover" for the background image. This really should be changed and set to default, OR introduce a setting to select the background settings (cover, contain, etc.).
Currently, the only fix is to override in CSS via module ID.
Background images scale with proper aspect ratios.
They don't.

I’m referencing the background image for the module only. It does not have any configuration options. On responsive sites the background image is distorted by not defaulting to “cover”
My question was: Which kind of module?
Custom Module?
Articles Module?
Banner Module? (see the comment from @brianteeman)
Other module type?
You can add a screenshot to make it clearer

Closing as no information is given.
Only one module supports a background image (the custom module) and it has an alternative layout called banner which does set the background image to cover etc
