The fallback uses @type: Article
which is a great choice for a default setting
However if you want to add richdata then the only article option available is blogPosting which is a sub-sub classification
I would have expected to be able to select a more generic classification from that article heirarchy or even something from the webpage hierarchy
Looking at the provided schema there doesnt appear to be any logic in why they were chosen
