This only happens with the final level of the menu tree expanded
I havent been able to find the problem yet - posting it here in case someone else wants to have a look
Issue
<ul> and <ol> must only directly contain <li>, <script> or <template> elements (list)

Fix all of the following:
List element has direct children that are not allowed inside <li> elements

Found the problems. All caused because of a misunderstanding about building accessible menus. I am working on a fix but it might take a few days.
FWIW the menu should work with the keys up, down, left, right, NOT with tabs. Accessibility is totally ruined here...
It is not a menu - it is a set of navigation links

I am assuming that this is related so posting it here
Looks like it needs quite a bit of work as NVDA is also having problems with the menu when expanded and announces
menu itemmultiple times on expanded sub menu
