This is a partial cleaning. Removed some redundant else clauses and reorganized some of the logic to take advantage of early returns.

Still need to clean up some of the function, but wanted to make sure I haven't broken it yet.

I think that is all I'm going to do for now on this class. There is more that can be done, but this is a good start.
