On a fresh install of Joomla! 3.3.6 Stable choose not to install sample data. Is it normal for the sample data folder to be installed with all the sample data images in it regardless of my choice, please? Have I missed an option somewhere during install to choose not to install them?

The images are included as part of the full install package, there isn't any handling in the scripts to remove files if no sample data is installed. You can safely remove them; we've revised our packaging scripts to not include them in updates.
