Steps to recreate issue:
Clean install 3.3.6 (used Siteground Softaculous for speed!)
Change Update Server in JUpdate to Testing
Leave Custom URL field blank.
Save and close
Pop-up message says there is a 3.3.7-dev update available :
url field is auto filled in
Press update and it fails :
I have done this twice with a fresh joomla install each time.

I did try it with this yesterday:
http://developer.joomla.org/cms-packages/Joomla_3.4.0-dev-Development-Update_Package.zip
putting the url in manually - same error message
You'd have to put that URL into the Extension Manager. I need to update the XML file serving the updates to reflect the latest changes, and that'll be done this weekend.
no problem then - thanks for checking Michael
Scripts are updated. With luck, everything is back in sync and will properly work for testing updates to 3.4.
"Your site has been successfully updated. Your Joomla version is now 3.4.0-dev."
Successfully updated - thanks!
There isn't a 3.3.7-dev package anymore (see http://developer.joomla.org/cms-packages/). I'm a few weeks behind on the nightly build scripts, need to update them to reflect merging the 3.4 branch onto staging.
