Make site's "Brand" (Web title") larger and on the header bars #4959
I work on multiple joomla sites, and sometimes when switching from one site to another I find myself working in the back end of the wrong site. For example I am updating 4 sites for a university. There is a live site, a development site etc etc for each of the 4 schools. They all have similar names and to a certain extent similar content.
Just this morning I started working in the wrong development site. Fortunately before I did too much damage, I noticed the tiny extremely abbreviated name of the site in the upper right corner of the administrator panel. The css class is called "brand", so I assume that's what it's called in the programming.
To prevent this common error from occurring I suggest there be a small adjustment in all of the Joomla administrator panels. Instead of rendering of the site's name in small type, flush right, usually "abbreviated" to just a few letters, why not move it down to the main Header blue bar and use the same size type as the component. There is plenty of real estate there and no need to have the site's name abbreviated so extremely. Certainly the name of the site's "brand" deserves to be about the same size as the Joomla logo on the header bar.
I am not a programmer, just an end user. So I am asking that a programmer take on this tracker item.
Attached is a mock up of my suggestion. I am sure thousands of weary Joomla webmasters working late hours would appreciate this simple but effective change. It would still provide a link to the front end of the site.

Ah. Didn't realise they had to be "LESS'ed". I'll sort it this weekend. :)
Hi
I've been lurking here.
Thanks all for taking care of this. I assume it's looking like it will be implemented in the next update of Joomla? Joomla 3.5??? Or am I not quite correct?
Rowby
@rowby if @antonydoyle update the less and generate it via generatecss.php. We can test this and if this is successful tested a comitter can get this in. This can be 3.4.x or any later release as this needs updated and tested.
I have to say that I really don't like this change :/
For what reason?

@brianteeman Mostly based my own perception of aesthetics. Furthermore I don't really acknowledge the UX benefits of the PR, as one would properly navigate by the browser titles instead, when having multiple tabs open.
But what is the value then of the current display of the site name in the
top right when it is truncated and can often become useless as a result?

Of course I don't know how the majority name their sites, but in my opinion 14 characters should be enough to give some sort of indication.
Joomla extensions site
Joomla demo site
Joomla community site
What you are left with is mainly the same. That's the OP point.

Would like to see it where the OP intended, don't like it where it shows when applying the PR.
Looks like the H1 tag pushes it down.
Hello losedk, in my case I would certainly appreciate the Site name being in the header, clearly visible. When I am working on multiple sites at once (and even when I am opening and closing multiple sites at once), the browser tabs are not helpful Browser tabs also abbreviate site names
To address dgt41's comment. I suggest we could perhaps keep the abbreviated name and link where it is (but perhaps still not so drastically abbreviated), but still have the large linked site name in the header. If the administrator wants to turn it off, that's their prerogative. I would say most people use Joomla out of the box and never even see the option to hide the header.
...Rowby
Think OP made it very clear why this is desired. Obviously people are not going to use the option of hiding the header. Especially if that is going to make it harder to distinguish between different instances.
A proper identification of the site shouldn't require any further motivation!
Concerning the original problem there are several alternatives. Both color and logo could be adjusted per environment. Showing status on top shows the full sitename at the bottom. Hoover and it shows the full name. Full sitename is shown when status at bottom.
So, no to the current implementation, yes to the original suggestion. Suggest to look for different solution to original problem.
@rowby Thanks for your screenshot of the actual problem. But I don't really understand why you name all your sites "Welcome to the..." - It seems overkill to implement your change, when you can just rename the sites :)
Agree with @infograf768
"Welcome to..." was requested by the client. Even if the welcome was not included, Also in my case the names of the Departments would also turn that into a long site name.
I think an adaption of the Wordpress implementation of the site name would be the best solution. (See my earlier screen capture of Wordpress admin panel.) It's much more user friendly regarding the site name and the (visit site link) than the Joomla admin panel.
Best,
Rowby
As a workaround, until this hopefully gets fixed, here is what I have been doing with my sites.
I've replaced Joomla's graphic with a graphic that clearly shows the site name.
Already, seeing the site's name clearly, has prevented me from making a major screwup a couple of days ago - as I switched from site to site. I also have "civilians" working on these sites, and I really don't want them to accidentally make a major mistake -- forcing me to go back in an fix their mistake because they were in the wrong site.
However having to create a site graphic logo for each site I work on is a bit of a pain -- something that most web designers won't do, or actually won't know is even possible
thats a nice easy solution. can we close this now then?

You can do that easily by using a custom html module:

That's excellent, nfograf768.
How can we add that feature into an option within Joomla admin so a person implement it, if they wish, without needing to create a custom module. (Most will not be aware that this is even possible.)
Rowby
I meant using the Core Custom HTML module.
Just would like it to be an option in the admin panel, perhaps in Global Configuration for a person to activate your core custom custom html module-type solution to put whatever they want in that bar to identify their site. This would be really nice, because it doesn't affect the actual site name. So the person can give it a more useful name, such as "Development Site"
For example in my case I have developement sites and live sites with the same site name. Using your Custom html solution (ideally activated in the Global Configuration section" would be very nice feature addition.
Again most people don't know you can add a custom html module to the admin panel as you have done. Adding it to the global configuration section would make it really work for everyone.
Rowby
It works for everyone right now - we cant create options for everything

It is so simple as you can add a module to the Frontend.
What do you think about the Wordpress "solution". That seems nice and clean and automatic.
Rowby
Hello,
I am going to close this issue as an alternative solution has been given and I agree we shouldn't need an option for something that is already possible. The option of the custom HTML module can be documented at docs.joomla.org.
Thank you for your contribution.

@antonydoyle this changes need also be apply to the less files and need after this we need to generate the css files with the https://github.com/joomla/joomla-cms/blob/staging/build/generatecss.php
