In back-end of Joomla 2.5.27, Users > User Manager
Try to create a New user with email address that has a TLD with more than 4 characters.
E.g. use email address: test@test.travel
.travel is an existing Top Level Domain and should be accepted.
test@test.travel is not accepted as email address and user cannot be saved.
In Joomla 3.3.6 & 3.3.7 it is possible to use a TLD in email address that is longer than 4 characters, so it has been solved in the Joomla 3.x series.
The regex code for email rule in J2.5.27 & J3.3.x differ, see: http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?f=615&t=862628#p3231145
