What happened?

  1. In the admin dashboard Joomla version 5.4.5-rc1 is showing as available update despite Joomla update options being set to stable. It also shows up on the Update page.

Version

5.4

Expected result

Release candidtaes should NOT be shown if the default channel is set to stable.

Suspect an error in the update XML - please correct.

Actual result

as above

System Information

5.4.4

Additional Comments

This is not the first time this has happened. Careless procedure? Or a bug in 5.4.4 Joomla Update checking

I can't reproduce. No one of my Joomla 5.4.4 websites are displaying the RC as update.

That's interesting - all of mine are (4 of them). All are on stable and no automatic updates for Joomla itself and one is on development for extensions (on my test server) and the other three are on stable for extension updates.

I wonder if you have auto updates on and that's why its not showing because it has done it already automatically? I'm not about to switch any of mine to automatic Joomla updates cos I think that is a really really bad idea and I want to remain in control (I still have more than 6 sites happily quietly running with Joomla 3 - if it ain't broke, don't fix it. And I'l probably only start using J6 when I next start a new site)

No, I have no automatic updates. What happens when you click on the update notification in the dashboard?

Well this is really weird - the one I was using to grab those screenshots now shows no updates, as does one other (which was previously showing the RC) but the third one still shows this

I'm guess that it was an error in the update xml and some kind person has updated it to rc rather than stable while I was typing :-)

Or maybe a cache problem?

@rogercreagh please check the minimum update stability for your extensions.

Site 1 has Joomla stable, Extensions Development. Was showing 5.4.5-rc1 update, now showing no update
Site 2 has Joomla stable, Extensions stable. Was showing 5.4.5-rc1 update, now showing no update
Site 3 has Joomla stable, Extensions stable. Is still showing 5.4.5-rc1 update EDIT wrong info

I don't see how it can be a caching problem as they should never have shown the RC update in the first place. Sites 2 & 3 are on the same virtual server and are now showing different options.

The previous post was incorrect. It is actually
Site 1 has Joomla stable, Extensions Development. Was showing 5.4.5-rc1 update, now showing no Joomla update and no extension update
Site 2 has Joomla stable, Extensions stable. Was showing 5.4.5-rc1 update, now showing no update
Site 3 has Joomla stable, Extensions Develpment. Is still showing 5.4.5-rc1 update with also one extension needing update (which actually has an alpha tag)

So I switched site 3 to Stable for extensions and re-checked for extension updates and it correctly shows no extension updates and on the main dashboard is now showing no Joomla or extension update.

If I switch the extension level back to development and re-check extension updates then it correctly shows one extension update available but also shows the J5.4.5-rc1 update as available.

So the problem occurs if Joomla is on stable, Extensions are on Development and there is an extension with a development update. In this case Joomla update starts to show the RC update.. If there are no extensions with a development update then it doesn't show the invalid Joomla update.

In the case of site 1 I think another admin did the extension update while I wasn't looking so it was the same case as site 3 and is now cleared as there is no development extension update pending. I can't explain site 2 though.

Testing Report - XAMPP Environment

Setup:

  • Joomla 5.4.4
  • Windows 11 + XAMPP 8.2
  • Joomla Update Channel: Default/Stable
  • Extension Minimum Stability: Development

Result:

  • Update shows only Joomla! 5.4.5 (stable)
  • No RC version displayed
  • Bug NOT reproduced on my setup

Conclusion:
The bug appears to be environment-specific or intermittent.
It may require specific conditions (certain extensions with pending dev updates) to trigger.

@pratibha-builds

It may require specific conditions (certain extensions with pending dev updates) to trigger.

Exactly that. See comment above.

So the problem occurs if Joomla is on stable, Extensions are on Development and there is an extension with a development update. In this case Joomla update starts to show the RC update.
If there are no extensions with a development update then it doesn't show the invalid Joomla update.

In your setup did you have an extension with a development update pending?

Also are you on J5.4.4 - currently there is no RC update for j5.4.4 or j5.4.5 as far as I can see.

You need to test when there is a development update for your version of Joomla and also a development update for an extension. It is possible that it only happens with Joomla RC updates - I've never seen a beta or alpha update offered in the stable channel.

If you did this then let's compare the update.xml for your extension and mine...
