Install 5.4.2 (current stable)
Select Stable update channel
Do not enable automated updates
Observe that a new update available 5.4.3-rc1 is reported in the system dashboard
Visit the update page
Click on the more info link to Joomla site - observe that 5.4.2 is still the current release and and no mention of 5.4.3
Just for the hell of it since you are on an unimportant test install click the Install Update on the update page
Observe that 'something' is downloaded and installed and it reports that your site has been updated to 5.4.2
Check Joomla Info and confirm version is still 5.4.2
Go back to system dashboard and observe that Joomla is Out of date and new version 5.4.3-rc1 is still showing
New RC release should not trigger Stable channel Update Notifications
Release Candidate channel or less should trigger them
5..4.3-rc1 Iis triggering update notification
Joomla 5.4.2 on Apache2 on Ubuntu 24.04 with PHP 8.3.30

@rogercreagh What is the value of the minimum stability setting in the extensions installer? If it is not stable, what happens if you change it to stable?
extension update level should have xero impact on joomla update level. if it does then thats a bug

When I changed to stable I needed to clear caches and the session to get the normal channel back

@brianteeman Sure. That's why I'm asking, to see if that is the problem.
@richard67 sorry for not replying. For reasons unknown I'm no longer getting notifications from github. Yes the setting had got changed to 'development' (how, I have no idea - could the previous joomla update have changed it? Seems unlikely. Very strange). Its a shame that the system dashboard widget doesn't tell you what channel you are on - I never looked at the actual installer page while it was only offering an RC version. When I did look after setting it back to "Stable" and 5.4.3 came up as the new offer I see that it says "Default" not "Stable" which is a bit confusing - and starts with "D" like Development so is easy to misread.
Anyway now sorted.

One moment but the issue is still there or not?
Aargh - this probably needs to be re-opened as I was not aware that the Joomla Updater had a different setting to the Extension updater.
With the joomla Updater set to "Default-Stable" and the Extension Updater set to "Development" it was definitely offering a Joomla Release Candidate update. This should not happen.
Of course currently there is no RC offered so it is not showing. The fault may show up next time there is a Joomla RC update offered. Or maybe it was specific to 5.4.3.RC if there was an error in the update xml.
Joomla5 by the way
I think it should be reopened because it looks like a bug

Same issue here when Extension Update Level is set to Beta.
