I probably will not use it also but it isn't so strange that someone does it. If the field is there why not use it?
But I'm going to ensure that the hit counter is shown inthe backend as it does in the article management!

I'm just wondering why not to remove that field from the database instead...?

I'm really not sure why there needs to be a hit counter for the category. I cannot find a reason why I would like to know how many times one particular category has been visited.
