Steps to reproduce the issue
start with a clean latest stable 5.3.3
settings to update to nighly builds
Expected result
able to update to 5.4.0-beta3-dev nigthly build
Actual result

the joomla_update.php log shows

no, cause discovered on a live demo session, and switched to an already installed 5.4 instance to show automatic update, which was the goal for that session, i've ipotized some caching issue, and i moved forward 😨

closing as now i was able to update
Strange, at least the download should work... since at least I can download the file... did you tried it manually?
