The only downside I can see is all of the places in css where "Font Awesome 6 Free" is hardcoded as the font family. However, FontAwesome does provide official css variables that are available in version 6 and 7 that could be used in place of hardcoding a version number.

Somebody has to assemble joomla-fontawesome.css again. icon- is hardcoded everywhere. Is there any idea of changing with fa- and using the latest awesome.css directly? Are there any other considerations?

This will surely not be possible in Joomla 6
But for later versions .. let's see
