Upload some images to the lowest level

Images are there but are not shown

Can't replicate either, with or without the thumbnails enabled.
Do you get any error in the browser console?
Do you get any error when the site is in debug mode with error reporting set to 'maximum'?

Bit of a stab in the dark, but I think I've had something like this and the issue was with Akeeba Admin Tools. Do you have that installed?
