In addition, under no circumstance the function was able to return null.
I've updated the function to reflect its description and return false in case of badly formed URL.

Do NOT commit!
This breaks multilanguage sites using Unicode Aliases (and also "normal sites")..
To test set a unicode alias for a menu item => 404

@infograf768 @demis-palma here is a updated PR that should also fix the unicode aliases issue.

@note the same code is allready in staging so it is a 2.5.x only issue.
