From what I can tell the bug is in the upstream code https://github.com/julkue/mark.js which has not had any activity for about 6 years. Maybe we should switch to a more active fork https://github.com/angezid/advanced-mark.js

Yea, should be possible. On quick look it seems enough replace mark.js with advanced-mark.js, and it should continue to work with existing code.
