If you are not recording the number of hits for an article then there is no point in displaying the count of hits.
In the component options for com_content set "record hits" to NO and this will remove the hots column from the article and featured article lists
with hits displayed
without hits displayed

Pity just to close after successful tests. Seems a sensible change and the Popular Articles module remains a separate issue because if hit recording is turned off the last count remains with no notice that hit recording is off.
