Pull Request for Issue #28310 .
Summary of Changes
Partly reverting my PR #27941 by moving code back to own method which can be called by the menuitem childclass.
I have chose to use a new method name to ensure greatest possible backward compatibility
Testing Instructions
Test the edit Associations button in various components, especially the menuitem and articles. But also check others to ensure I didn't miss yet another one.

The button in menu items doesn't work
