If you view an article to which there is no direct menu, and make all breadcrumb items as links, the last item will link to the homepage, instead of the current article

It's not a bug but an intended behavior. The breadcrumb module doesn't link the latest item and there is also not a reason to do so.
If you want to link to it, rather than using the ContentHelperRoute you could just use the current URL in an override of the module.
