You are doing it right, and then you are doing it very wrong.

It is a very cool feature to offer a free site on *.joomla.com - I was very positively touched by that, a very good marketing feature and indeed I was already looking at the prices for a yearly support contract.

But then you do something very stupid: after login into my newly setup Joomla instance I see a warning about an unsupported PHP version - you lost me right at that point as a potential customer. Really, how can somebody do that? Unbelievable!

My years old perception of Joomla was "security problems, devs have no clue and do not ever think about security" - that is still based on the flood of exploits Joomla was known for many years. Now revisiting Joomla after a few years you nearly got me into re-thinking my verdict about Joomla world in general - I really liked the focus on privacy you put on the top of your feature presentation, that is something that you can make lots of positive impressions with in the current situation.

But then this no-go - using an unsupported php version. First message. After Login. I mean, this really feels like kind of a satire, could be a joke in a tv show.

BTW also this issue tracker is totally unacceptable - even this input box I am typing in is so extremely primitive and old school, it shows very well that Joomla built up big in marketing and found privacy as a very good item to build value on, but behind that curtain there is still that well known incompetence. Very disappointing.

Who ever is responsible for that, please do the community a favor and step back, let better people take your role - Joomla will never leave that "low end php underdog joke software" level if the person responsible for this will not leave.

Error on Login to new *.joomla site:

We have detected that your server is using PHP 7.1.33 which is obsolete and no longer receives official security updates by its developers. The Joomla! Project recommends upgrading your site to PHP 7.2 or later which will receive security updates at least until 2020-11-30. Please ask your host to make PHP 7.2 or a later version the default version for your site. If your host is already PHP 7.2 ready please enable PHP 7.2 on your site's root and 'administrator' directories – typically you can do this yourself through a tool in your hosting control panel, but it's best to ask your host if you are unsure.

Also this ultra-primitive issue tracker seems to have a problem with uploading images. I sent a screenshot of that error, but that was too much for this software (no, it was not too big, just 25k). Unbelievable. Why not let people do these things that have some professional experience with programming?

Looks like this "ultra-primitive" issue tracker is used by hundreds of projects and that it is quite easy to drag and drop any image...

You’ll be happy to know my involvement with Joomla has slowed down massively then

This was a mistake on LJO systems - Joomla 4.x currently launches with PHP 7.3.x (confirmed working) and Joomla 3.x should be launching with PHP 7.2.x, but instead, it's launching 7.1.x. This has now been corrected. With many thousands of free joomla.com sites launched per month, I can confidently say this has been an issue for only a short period of time. Thank you for reporting.

Thanks @jonathanCA it should be possible to use PHP 7.4 for J3 and J4.

Thanks @apimon for reporting this issue. I'm closing this ticket.

Yes, the system runs all major versions simultaneously. It can be toggled instantly by users, and/or it can be set to run the higher version across the board. I'll bring this up so we can come to a consensus on it.

In general. running Joomla 3.x on PHP 7.2.x is done so that we can ensure 3rd party extension compatibility.
