Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.

We follow the concept of a light core so we are including only essential things into core. I have seriours doubts that a backend messages is something we need in the core of Joomla!

Describe the solution you'd like

Remove com_messages from joomla 4 core

Additional context

There are extensions that can do this.

At the moment we don't have the resources to create and manage essential things into core rapidly.

Set to "closed" on behalf of @alikon by The JTracker Application at issues.joomla.org/joomla-cms/26045

alikon why you cloced this RFC joomla core issue ?

avatar HLeithner
HLeithner - comment - 27 Aug 2019

Because it's not an issue and a won't fix. It's needed by com_privacy and by com_content on article creation to notify admins about new articles.

HLeithner I am new here and still learning how to contribute to joomla. I want to contribute to joomla 4 . This is my request for comments. Sad that my request for comments was closed on Alikon s if I remember correctly claim.

Regarding com_privacy and com_content on article creation to notify admins about new articles.
I have serious doubts that a backend messages to notify admins in the joomla backend about new articles is something we need in the core of Joomla! We should let comment on this. Personaly I think these messages just take space, resources, have zero real use case cenario and takes time for contributors to create and maintain.

Joomla afaik has about 600 contributors, but just on behalf of one contributor in just 1 hour my request for comments was closed.

Please reopen this RFC to show that joomla do not discourage to join new contributors and do not discourage theus about 600 contributors who still not commented on this issue to comment.

If this RFC remains closed we understad this as silent message that new contributors are not wellcomed in joomla, and for theus about 600 contributors to be silent or feel the consequence...

HLeithner please tell (if you claim its not an issue) how to correctly submit joomla 4 feature removal request ?

Alikon is JBS Lead and one of his jobs is it to keep the tracker clean that's the reason he closed it.

And com_message is an essential part of joomla so it can't and shouldn't be removed, most requests go in the other direction. Extending com_message to a complete messaging platform.

But for discussing this it's better to use https://forum.joomla.org/viewforum.php?f=575 then the tracker.

We have a page that explains you how to contribute: https://www.joomla.org/contribute-to-joomla.html

Another thing is removing a feature from Joomla needs a new major version and the next major version (5.0) after the upcoming 4.0 is expected in 2-4 years. Discussing this topic on the tracker makes less sense at this time.

HLeithner thank you for your comments.

afaik Joomla 4 is still new major version alfa version so removing a feature from Joomla 4 can be done now, no need to wait for joomla 5 10 years when you can do it in Joomla 4.

So the question remains why com_message is an essential part of joomla 4 alfa as we follow the concept of a light core?

My RFC is very clean but was closed on quite dubious "if I remember correctly" claim.

Yes alikon as JBS Lead can close tracker, but we understand this as silent message that new contributors are not wellcomed in joomla

As already mentioned several times, com_messages is essential for several other components in joomla.

All removals have to be deprecated in a minor version before it get's removed in the major version. Joomla tries hardly to follow semver.

There are many other thing you can help Joomla to get better, for example testing PRs. That would really be appreciated.

@Goodcontributor

No there is not silent message

we always welcome new contributors

forgive me if my closing was quite not so much clear, but I believe that contributor old or new should have at least some basic knowledge , this is an issue tracker not a forum nor an helpedesk

afaik no one agrees on what essential work com_messages do in other components in joomla thats why my RFC should be open and not supressed.

afaik regarding semver removals can be deprecated in joomla 3.10 minor version before it get's removed in the joomla 4 major version if need to follow semver.

forgive me alikon abut my basic knowledge as to want to be new contributor to joomla afaik FRC is common thing in issue tracker

Please keep on topic

Really simple.

  1. Remove it and see if it breaks anything on your development stack.
  2. Look at how/where it is being used (hints its not just private messages)
  3. Respect the knowledge of others with more joomla experience

@Goodcontributor or @Milglius or whatever name you can find
i cannot tolerate your behaviour you are wasting too much free time of "really" contributors

i really didn't care for your click & bait post on this issues tracker

surely we don't need such kind of contribution in this project, we already have a lot of real issues to take care of

PLT agreed that there will be no new deprecation in 3.10 because it's released at the same time as 4.0 and mainly include upgrade related patches and of course bugfixes.

About com_messages it seams you don't accept my answer, it's needed to communicate with the admin. So it seams I cannot help you more.

In my opinion alikon s actions and postings are offensive, toxic and negative. Its very unusual welcome to new joomla contributors to say at least...

HLeithner thank you for your comments. You did a lot more then other contributors combined. Yes we have different opinions about com_messages. I have very serious doubts that a backend messages is something we need in the core of Joomla!

Hope others as mentioned above with more joomla experience find out what essential work com_messages do in joomla because as a new contributor I do not see it, thats why this RFC is created. Now I see that only 1% of contributors want to have com_messages in joomla 4 others are silently ok with com_messages removed from joomla 4 core and follow the concept of a light core.

I love joomla and try as good as I can to contribute to joomla.

I love joomla and try as good as I can to contribute to joomla.

So get off the trolling bench and spend the time contributing instead of wasting every contributors time.

Submit the code to remove com-messages and it will be tested like everything else.

"Wouldn't it be a good idea if.....?" comments never get anywhere if you're expecting someone else to do it for you.
