Change the default media path (/images) under Content > Media > Options to whatever, I changed it to assets.
Create a User Custom Field Media and click on Directory option.
You will see the directory option will still lists all the default files and folders under /images.
The directory option should have respected the path set in Media > Options.
https://monosnap.com/file/biD48ThmkBIUOguRlAc7lJUAF45iiT
Still defaults to images which is the Joomla default.

@jwaisner Yes it is I believe, if not just media field, all custom fields when applicable defaults to /images folder.
please replace the label with j4 issue

I can reproduce this issue in J6 as well. Since J5.3 there is a new root level folder /files. I set path to it in Content > Media > Options > Path to File Folder and in com_content I add a custom field of type Media and there I set the directory path to local-files:/
I then open an article and click the select button of the custom field of type Media. Result: The content of /images is shown instead of /files.
First of all, it doesn't seem to switch the folder (if it does, 'files' is constantly bold)
and what is more, if you upload an image, it goes to /files anyway.
It's like it's still bugged.
OMG J6 is soooo bugged people : /
I CAN confirm that this issue exists IF you change the root folder structure from images/ to foobar/ or assets/ or asset/ etc if however you keep images/ and add a subfolder as the new target/location UNDER images/ such as images/newfolder4images it still works.
I am not adding a subfolder.
Should I? Why?
I have images and files for images and files.
The left area navigation is constantly bold so I have no idea whether it switches folder:
And one more thing - I have tons of images in the images folder.
Why aren't they showing up???? This is ridiculous.
Don't tell me Joomla now has to register every uploaded image (if so - is there a way to "scrap" the folder for those?).
I am migrating data from a 4.x Joomla to 6.x - constantly problems but as for extensions well - this happens
but root things? So many strange surprises...

If not - still - I can't switch folders. Once set files - it stays with files.

My original settings:
When I try to change it to any of those:
I get this error when i click save and close:
I have tmp folder on my project root at the same level as images:
I don't have assets folder at all.
only images, images/ and images\ works, nothing else.
also, I have tried using folders that I have on the system with full path and without, all didn't work.
This is my current update for 5.4-dev.
I don't know :)

it is probably conflicting with the settings in the filesystem plugin as i already said
@Milo-W - I don't have any issues with images/ or files/ but then again I don't use Custom Field Media fields, but you seem to be having other more basic issues like the images not being visible in images/
I don't know if you are not on Mattermost but if you are please reach out to me - tomorrow during the day, I have some time and we can do a shared screen meeting so that we can check it together.
Hey, I found that it's documented here: see
directory (optional) (translatable) is the directory from which the user will be able to choose a file. This attribute should be relative to the top level /images/ folder. The default is that the user will be confined to the top level /images/ folder.
Yeah but it doesn't work.
@brianteeman I have this:
What then?
I just want to use images and files.
And the mini menu (images/files) bold does not work correctly (I won't be repeating myself).
And most importantly - I can't see the images I already have in /images...
@Milo-W we would like to help.
I see that you have different separated issues that should have been identified separately so we can track each alone.
images but i found that it's documented as intentional. Did you use this feature in j4? If no then this shouldn't stop you from migration, no? (It doesn't mean it's not an issues though).images folder, this is different. Personally i focused on the first one and didn't notice the other.I am just a contributor who would like to help, i am not a member and my comment here doesn't reflect their response. I could be mistaken or misunderstood.
Hope your meeting with @exlemor would help.
At least try to state all your issues clearly so we can fix each as fast as possible or give you a potential solution. I can tell, we have wonderful crew who just need the issues to be stated clearly.
Also, if the meeting is public and you can share the link on mattermost this would help.
Good luck.
@CSGoat0 I just want to have my images in /images and see those. Joomla 6.1. No subfolder like /images/myfavoritecatimages
just /images because I am migrating a website from J4 where it all works within /images. Images are of course linked although we know I can make an automated change but on the other hand - why wouldn't I use just /images and have to add a subfolder?
Yeah, can't see them.
I have also worked as a Joomla contributor, for the UX team, for translations so yeah, this time I need some explanation - are those bugs? To me, based on my knowledge since Mambo, it IS a bug.
You know what, I will install another Joomla 6.1 clean and check whether those happen too (IMO they should, if not, then there would be some totally strange correlation between this and something I did at my now nearly finished migration).
@brianteeman well, I have to start from the top, the installation process with the password validation phase is broken for quite a long time and no one seems to be doing anything about it...
OK, installed fresh - I see the system stuff from images. I think it might be something with priviledges then because I just copied over images from an unzipped archive.
clearly you have a prioblem with your setup. Best to resolve that before throwing poison arrows
If it's my side - I will come back and say it.
If it's something the contributors somehow don't take on as a bug - well, it gets annoying.

OK so I removed everything, created a folder via panel. Generally it works.
BUT the panel seems to not being able to write what's inside of /images, like every 3rd refresh it goes into the directory... strange.

The way the Media panel works is very hmmm... varied.

What happens when you go to Media - does it scan folders and create thumbnails or something?

definitely something wrong with your installation/server
why are you even creating a folder. if its a clean install then the folder is already there
I think #18514 isn't a bug and is intentional. But it left us with a question, why we are allowed to change images in the options when we shouldn't?
Which one should we do?
images?I think the first option is the most reasonable for now according to this.
OK I think I have a possible problem:
strange non-utf or something signs in the file names
something like:
If I remove it or change it via SSH, the folder comes up. If not, it loads forever.
To consider whether it's a bug - or maybe there should be some info about it or something.
Even normal UTF ółęść in file names aren't a problem, but those are.
I will investigate what happened and why on my own but the thing is - should the panel somehow treat those as I think people tend to do this - name files with their country specific characters (I know it's bad, plus no spaces)...

EDIT:
And why is that so? My SSH has a Polish 8859-2 charset and it changes coding of the Polish characters, whereas if I copy over FTP, it stays like it should be... I am copying stuff over FTP now and it's OK.
So yeah, my side was the problem.

So yeah, my side was the problem. Incredible that in the same time changing folders was a problem, etc.
