You are looking in the wrong place
Look in the Content menu
At the moment Custom Fields are only available in Content

(This is an issue I brought up before and at JAB and was politely told I didnt know what I was talking about)

When i klick on Content/Fields i got this:

I am using staging Joomla. Status "Already up-to-date."

When the component is enabled, I do not get that 500 for Users or for Content.

@alikon I will let @laoneo explain the logic and thinking behind that but
basically if I remember the conversation correctly it is the same as
com_categories

Agree with JM, clean install J3.6.4 with latest Fields, i can add category and fields to both com_content and com_user and show them on the frontend without problems.

(but there is "some work" to be done before its "ready" as an new component in 3.7 IMHO)

In fact, this component needs much more to be usable:
We have to check if it is present AND enabled before proposing the new field in the Options as well as the specific menus.

I am closing this one as, obviously, the test was not done with a clean install of staging or the necessary queries in the db.

So all good here now?
