J3 Issue ?

I have updated to joomla 3.6. Upgrade process made my website www.malayalamlinks.com , the featured articles does not work properly. Before any of the articles when I unfeature and again feature it the article order changes and displayed at the top. Also I could edit the featured article number for example if theere are 1000s of articles I can find a trending article by searching the title. If I wish to place that article in to the first I page I could edit the article order number into a lowest number and easily I can place the articles in the top. Now that field is not available. Even I make articles sticky by changing the order in to a negative number. Now these features are not available in joomla 3.6.

@bill1235
Please change title of your issue to:

B/C break in featured articles ordering, sticky ordering and direct ordering edit no longer possible

Can we not fix the drag and drop ordering to allow direct value editing ?

Hasn't the same change made in all other list views in the past?

i don't know the history here, but for what i saw from the commit history until e11117d (16 Aug 2012) the ordering was like that in all backend views and that PR changed them to use drag & drop (except this view i think).

ggppdk - comment - 19 Jul 2016

Yes drag and drop ordering is needed
but adding 1 feature and removing 2 others ?

  • and why drag and drop ordering must not support sticky orderings or direct ordering edit ?

and what happens with sites that use it already ?

avatar ggppdk
ggppdk - comment - 19 Jul 2016

Usage scenario

  • featured articles are ordered by "ordering"
  • you have 2 sticky featured articles

J3.5

  • you add new article that is marked featured , this is placed of the list but it will remain below the 2 sticky items

The above happens automatically without going to featured management and moving article below the the 2 sticky articles

If change like this was to featured articles was to be done it should have been done years ago,
now it is B/C break, small ? not small break ?

What is the intent ? to dump sticky ordering support in JTable ?
If so 3rd party developers must be warned that sticky ordering is to be no longer supported, what about sites that already use the feature ?

[EDIT]
that is why JTable reorder does not reorder records with negative orderings

andrepereiradasilva - comment - 19 Jul 2016

don't ask me i didn't even know there is a sticky ordering.

avatar ggppdk
ggppdk - comment - 19 Jul 2016

@andrepereiradasilva

Of course drag and drop ordering is surely very important for UI ... but it needs some more work to allow sticky orderings, (that is why i use custom drag and drop ordering that supports it)

if there was no B/C break i would say drag and drop ordering is more important

So let's ignore sticky ordering (and also direct ordering edit) and maybe if there is good UI implementation, add it in the future as a new feature

Anyway i don't mind with this B/C break (some users will mind, don't know how many) as long as there is no change in JTable to break 3rd party extensions using negative orderings

avatar brianteeman
brianteeman - comment - 19 Jul 2016

What is sticky ordering?

avatar ggppdk
ggppdk - comment - 19 Jul 2016

Negative ordering numbers , JTable reorder does not touch them. Thus the appear at start of the listings, always, aka the term sticky. There was never an official term for negative orderings ? Sticky is the appropriate term to describe this

I have 10000s of articles in my site. Direct editing order list was very useful before. Now I can't use it and really a pain now. Ofcourse GUI is good but it is only good for the site with less number of articles.

I mean 10000s of articles in the website. Also 100 articles featured. If I wish to bring 100th featured artcile in to the top what I do? Is drag is that easy. I feel it is very difficult even with 25 articles. I prefer direct edit over gui. It will be good if we have both.

@ggppdk Yes direct ordering edit was very useful many ways. Like placing sticky artilces on the top as in wordpress

@andrepereiradasilva for menus or cateogories the gui ordering will be easier than the direct order editing, but articles and feautred artcles where there are 100s of articles i prefer edit order as shown by ggppdk. So by the new update I have lost one of the option or two now over gui.

1) For example using direct edit I can change order of 800th article in to order number 1. How can we use tha using drag. I can find any trending article by searching the title and edit the order. All these facilities are lost in 3.6 version

ggppdk - comment - 23 Jul 2016

I prefer to use an alternative ordering display that shows the ordering numbers and allows editing the ordering numbering directly (= how "featured manager" was in J3.5.x but with drag and drop re-ordering) and also make the ordering limits "visible"

I do not know

  • if the direct editing of ordering was removed because of UI, (=LIGHTER UI)
  • or because the extra work to support it was not done ?

Also a recent PR to fix performance of JTable::reorder,
will introduce high ordering numbers,

  • so that is one reason for not showing them and not allowing direct editing of ordering numbers,

myself i do not mind, i will "auto-shift" for display purposes after / if it is accepted

ordering

@ ggppdk are you using any third party extention to reorder the artciles. Can you say which one is that?

@bill1235

yes 3rd party,

i only posted picture, to show

  • the usefulness of having direct edit of ordering numbers, which also make possible to use the sticky ordering
  • and also to suggest that drag icons should show the ordering borders / limits, to give some good feedback to the user of what is happening

For a quick solution to edit the article order number for the featured-articles in the backend you can copy the view from Joomla! 3.5.1 :

https://github.com/joomla/joomla-cms/blob/3.5.1/administrator/components/com_content/views/featured/tmpl/default.php

to the Isis-Template-Override:

/administrator/templates/isis/html/com_content/featured/default.php

Thanks to Re:Later for this quick solution.

Alternatively:
Use the Hathor-Admin-Template for sticky ordering and direct ordering if you need this seldom

@Sieger66
I could not find such a folder in my joomla
/administrator/templates/isis/html/com_content/featured/default.php

only layouts and mod_version are the folders available under the folder html

Pls suggest

@bill1235
For example: Make the folders with ftp or with the Template-Manager:
https://docs.joomla.org/J3.x:How_to_use_the_Template_Manager

If you do not know what is "Template Override" see for example also:
https://docs.joomla.org/How_to_override_the_output_from_the_Joomla!_core

Hi Brian,
Still the issue remain unresolved!!! Can you imagine how one will feature an article for which order number is 1000 where 100 featured article exists. Is drag drop practical?

Whilst I understand that for a limited number of people with ordering requirements for large numbers of articles in a single category/with a featured tag this can be annoying, I'm going to close this based on the fact that the interface overall is better without this. For sites with large numbers of articles my advice would be to add an ordering field with a plugin back to com_content - should be relatively easy to retrieve this. But leaving the improved interface for the majority of Joomla users
