We need a colloquial term for these extensions that we are decoupling from the #Joomla CMS core. Suggestions?

Note that this can also include extensions like com_testpatcher, a number of modules from GSOC projects, etc and so on.

Joomla Extras (JEX)

I like!

Since we have "third-party" extensions today, wouldn't these effectively be "community supported" extensions?

Yes. I just think we can think of a more glamorous name :)

True. I would argue that it conveys what they are fairly effectively ;-)

I agree, but it's a mouthful. Could you not do something like this for
the fully qualified name:

"Joomla Extras - Extensions supported by the Joomla community for Joomla"

Colloquially that contracts to "Extras" which is probably a nice term
for the general user to latch onto. Thinking out loud, it would also
allow for extras.joomla.org (that may or may not be useful, but it's
an interesting thought). Thoughts?

My thinking behind "Joomla Extras" was not from the point of view of developers/contributors or other deeply involved types but from the point of view of end users who don't think deeply about such things.

If they see something called Joomla Extras they will think "oh good bells and whistles lets check this out" where as other labels are more likely to make them go "oh Wha...?". Unlike common use phrases like "Third Party" labels like "community supported" are not in common use with CMS end users. #JustMy2¢

Joomla Extras! :+1:

Or, to give one suggestion:
Joomla Addons (JA)

You are right. If we are calling them extras they are project
supported by implication. Of course, we still need to explain that.
So, thinking out loud, the JED could have a featured category called
"Extras" and under that is a category tree that makes some sort of
hierarchical sense?

Colloquially
:+1: Much agreement here.

As the dictionary says:

I realise this is backing the home team but "Extras" has the built-in implication of being a part of the core product, where-as "Addons" are what can be added e.g. Third Party extension the JED already looks after.

Should "off core extras" receive any special treatment from the JED? Maybe they can just go into the category they would normally fall in.

The big idea is to foster more collaboration around less variations on
the same theme, but still allowing flexibility. I think it's important
to highlight them, and as long as there is an indicator, I'd be happy.
What about if it was another "type". That is "Free Download",
"Commercial" and "Extra". Would that work?

At that point is label it "core" and allow a sort by paid, free and core.

For me: Officially Supported Extensions
Note: All other extensions are also "extras for Joomla" but not officially ones!

Suggestions noted. Marketing can refer to them if this ever gets off the ground.
